Prof Thumboo was appointed Professor of English at the National University of Singapore in January 1979 and is presently Emeritus Professor of the Department of English Language and Literature and Visiting Professor, City University of Hong Kong. He served as Head of the Department of English Language and Literature (1977-1993) and was the fi rst Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (1980-1991) and Professorial Fellow (1995-2002). He has carried profound commitment to the development of Singapore literature through his role as critic, academic, anthologist and literary activist and continues to be an active champion of the arts in Singapore.

This is book is a compilation of Prof. Thumboo's extensive bibliography, which ranges from his own anthologies such as essays and articles, as well as works which he had edited to prefaces of works by others.

ABOUT THE COMPILERS

R Ramachandran has long been associated with the promotion of reading, writing, publishing and library development in his previous appointments as Director, National Library, Deputy Chief Executive, National Library Board and subsequently Secretary-General, International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). He has been an honorary member of the National Book Development Council of Singapore since 1969, serving in various capacities as Hon. Secretary, Vice-Chairman and Chairman. In 2005, he was appointed as Executive Director of the National Book Development Council of Singapore.

Phan Ming Yen is Assistant General Manager of The Arts House at the Old Parliament and has been with the organisation since 2003. Prior to The Arts House, Phan was a journalist, having covered the Singapore arts scene for nine years: he worked with The Straits Times and was the founding editor and later contributing editor of The Arts Magazine, formerly published by Esplanade-Theatres on the Bay. From 2000 to 20002, he was a research scholar at the National Institute of Education, his area of research being Western art music practices in 19th and early 20th century Singapore. He has contributed to Narratives: Notes on a Cultural Journey, Cultural Medallion Recipients 1979-2001 and was writer and researcher for Touches: 10 Years of the Singapore Dance Theatre. Phan has also taught music criticism and music promotional skills at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts
